A two year federal grant of $4.85 million has been awarded to the Pinellas County Health Department for local anti-obesity efforts, focusing on policy changes to promote increased physical activity and improved nutrition. The grants are from the Prevention and Public Health Fund, a component of the Affordable Care Act/Health and Human Services Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) program.
CPPW represents a community-wide coordination of efforts to use prevention as a means of targeting obesity in the fight against chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. As part of a prevention and wellness initiative administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CPPW is intended to coordinate and promote partnerships with local governments, school districts, businesses, community organizations and health-related coalitions.
Project Area
The Pinellas County Health Department is the lead agency in serving the urban area of Pinellas County (pop. 910,260 U.S. Census est. 2008) and its 24 municipalities. CPPW will focus on the entire population residing in the county, but specific activities will target minority and school populations.
Proposed Interventions
CPPW seeks effective, sustainable policies, systems and environmental changes that encourage healthy choices for nutrition and physical activity. Efforts in the program will include but are not limited to:
- Media Campaigns promoting healthy choices for
- Food/drink
- Public transit
- Bicycling/walking
- Increasing Access to:
- Healthy food/drink availability
- Safe, attractive, accessible places for activity
- Safe routes to school
- Local governments
- City planning and zoning assessments
- Signage for neighborhood destinations
- Increased signage for public transportation and bike lanes
Partners
Partners in the CPPW alliance with the Pinellas County Health Department include the Health and Human Services Coordinating Council for Pinellas as the lead coalition as well as Pinellas County government, Pinellas County Schools and Pinellas County’s 24 municipal governments, businesses and faith based groups.
