The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) as established in
1984 by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The idea was to collect data on actual behaviors that
could be useful for planning, initiating, supporting and evaluating health
promotion and disease prevention.
Currently, the BRFSS is the largest continuously conducted telephone health
survey in the world. The survey has enabled CDC, state health departments, other
health and education agencies to monitor risk behaviors related to
chronic diseases, injuries, and death. Also, it is one of the most
effective tools used today in preventing disease and promoting health.
